Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why hire an electrician when a handyman can do the same job?

A: You're right - lots of people can do electrical work. However, in Ontario, the rules and regulations surrounding electrical work often make it more beneficial to hire a professional. All Niagara electricians need to be certified as a "master electrician" and be licensed by the Electrical Contractor Registration Agency of the Electrical Safety Authority. When you see a ECRA/ESA License, you know you're dealing with a properly licensed electrician. A handyman may have experience with electrical work, but if they don't have an ECRA/ESA license, any work that they do is technically unauthorized. In the event you have an electrical fire that results from the work done by a handyman, chances are you insurance won't cover you because you had an unauthorized "electrician" do the work.

Q: If I'm hiring an electrician, what should I be looking for?

A: First and foremost, you want to make sure they are certified electrical contractors, so look for the ECRA/ESA License mentioned above. You will want to know they are fully insured, can arrange permits, are qualified to do the kind of electrical work you need, and can provide a written quote for the work to be performed. How about references? Ask for them, or use an online service to get reviews. Make sure they can also provide a certificate of inspection so you know the work was done properly and inspected by a third party.
